A NATURAL FAVORITE Magazine
Project type
Illustration | Editorial Concept Design | Cultural Representation
Originally conceived as a symbolic self-portrait, this illustration was reimagined into a conceptual magazine cover for A Natural Favorite—a fictional publication centered on natural hair care, DIY recipes, styling tutorials, and professional insights.
The portrait features the artist (me :)) rendered in rich honey tones, the short, coily hair transformed into moss-like texture as bees, purple petals, and clusters of foliage adorn the figure and the backdrop, blending human and environment to celebrate the beauty of nature, uplift the Black identity, and reinforce their connections to one another.
The final cover uses stylized, hand-colored typography and editorial layout elements to emulate the visual language of print publications while honoring the softness and detail of the illustration itself.
The piece invites viewers to see natural hair not just as a feature of black culture, but as a living landscape that can build community and confidence—worthy of care, reverence, and celebration as our knowledge on the subject continues to expand, even today.
